The replacement of missing teeth and the support of removable appliances (dentures and partial dentures) has been dramatically changed through the placement of dental implants. An implant is essentially a screw which is placed into the bone, and fuses with the bone, providing the next best thing to a natural tooth. The procedure is surprisingly uncomplicated, well-tolerated and extremely effective. Below is a picture of a conventional single tooth implant.

‘Mini-implants’ differ from conventional implants  primarily by having a smaller width or diameter. In particular, the usage of mini-implants to stabilize loose, poorly fitting dentures has proved highly successful. These implants have grown increasingly popular in cases where there is inadequate bone, limited finances, or health concerns/fears that demand a less invasive procedure than conventional implants.

Usually 4-7 implants can be placed safely and quickly, then the denture can be adapted to ‘click’ onto the implants by adhering female button-like adaptors to the underside of a new or existing denture.
